Cross stitch is one of those crafts that looks impressive but is genuinely straightforward to learn. A grid, some thread, a needle, and a little patience — that's really all it takes. But if you've ever stood in a craft shop (or scrolled through pages of kits online) feeling completely overwhelmed by the options, you're not alone.
Here's a straightforward guide to choosing the right cross stitch kit as a beginner — and what to look for to make sure your first project is a success.
Start with the Right Fabric Count
Cross stitch is worked on Aida fabric, which has an evenly spaced grid of holes. The “count” refers to how many stitches fit into one inch — and this matters more than most beginners realise.
- 14-count Aida is the sweet spot for beginners. The holes are easy to see, the stitches are a comfortable size, and it works with standard embroidery thread.
- 18-count or higher is finer and better suited to more experienced stitchers who want more detail.
- 11-count Aida has larger holes and is great if you're working with children or have difficulty seeing fine detail.
When in doubt, start with 14-count. It's forgiving, widely available, and produces a lovely result.
Choose a Simple Design
It's tempting to go straight for a complex, multi-coloured design — but resist the urge. As a beginner, you want a pattern that:
- Uses a limited number of thread colours (5–10 is ideal)
- Has large blocks of the same colour rather than lots of tiny individual stitches
- Comes with a clear, colour-coded chart
- Is small enough to complete in a few sessions
At Stitch Kit Shop, our beginner cross stitch kits are designed with exactly this in mind. Each kit includes a beginner-friendly chart, pre-sorted threads, and step-by-step instructions — so you can focus on stitching, not deciphering a complicated pattern.
Make Sure Everything Is Included
A good beginner kit should include everything you need to get started:
- Aida fabric — pre-cut to size, ideally with the design printed or transferred on
- Stranded cotton threads — pre-sorted and labelled by colour
- A tapestry needle — blunt-tipped so it passes through the fabric without splitting it
- A pattern or chart — clear, colour-coded, and easy to follow
- Instructions — written for someone who has never cross stitched before
At Stitch Kit Shop, all of these are included as standard. And because every kit is handpicked and packed individually for each customer, you can tell us your colour preferences and skill level via our customer survey — and we'll make sure your kit is just right for you.
Consider the Hoop
Most cross stitch kits include a hoop to keep your fabric taut while you stitch — and this makes a real difference to the quality of your finished piece. Look for a kit that includes a hoop, or make sure you have one to hand before you start.
If you don't have a hoop or other equipment, we can supply additional items at an extra cost — just let us know when you fill out your survey.
Don't Overlook the Instructions
This might sound obvious, but the quality of the instructions can make or break your first experience. Look for kits that include:
- A clear explanation of the basic stitches (cross stitch, back stitch, and French knots are the most common)
- Guidance on how to start and finish your thread neatly
- Tips on reading the chart
- What to do if you make a mistake
Our kits are written with complete beginners in mind — no assumed knowledge, no jargon.
How Do You Know Which Kit Is Right for You?
Every stitcher is different. Some people love florals; others prefer geometric patterns or quirky illustrated designs. Some want a quick weekend project; others are happy to work on something over several weeks.
That's why we ask. Fill out our customer survey and tell us what you're after — your skill level, your style, your favourite colours — and we'll handpick a cross stitch kit that's made for you.
